Do you know if you have diabetes?

If you don't, you're not the only one. Nearly 6.2 million other people in the United States don't know either.

Each November, the American Diabetes Association sponsors American Diabetes Month to raise awareness of diabetes, in particular of Type 2 diabetes, which affects 90-95% of those who have the disease.

(The other kind, Type 1 diabetes, or insulin dependent, is less common, and usually appears during childhood or adolescence. This type of diabetes is what requires careful monitoring of blood sugar levels and regular injections of insulin.)

Type 2 diabetes is largely preventable!

By taking simple steps as proper nutrition and regular exercise, individuals greatly reduce their risk for this disease.

Individuals with diabetes have a greater risk for heart disease, blindness, kidney failure and lower extremity amputations not related to injuries.
